Rules


For you to participate in this staffing program, you must comply with all of the following rules:

  1. You must be an employee of The Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh in any one of the following positions (Refer to HR Policy 105 – Employment Status):
    a.  Full-Time
    b.  Part-Time
    c.  Unit Specific Supplemental
    d.  Share Supplemental
  1. If you are on orientation, in the disciplinary process, or on a leave of absence for any reason, or in a modified-duty position, you are not eligible to participate.
  2. You are not permitted to bid for a shift on scheduled vacation time, or scheduled holiday time.
  3. Your competencies, mandatory safety in-services, CPR certification, trauma requirements, and other required credentials (ACLS, PALS), as well as PPD testing must be up-to-date and complete as reflected on written documentation maintained by you to be eligible to bid in areas requiring such competencies.
  4. Your bid(s) will be considered for the staffing/skill mix needs one or more of the following five specialties: Critical Care, Emergency, Maternal Child Health, Medical-Surgical Telemetry, and Pediatrics.
  5. At the time of the bid, you are not permitted to bid on a different nursing unit if your nursing unit has a staffing need on the same shift.
  6. You can only bid for those shifts and holidays in excess of your scheduled work hours. Ex. – You must first meet your current scheduling obligations, according to your status or categories.
  7. You cannot work more than 16 hours in a 24 hour period.
  8. You cannot bid on shifts other than 4, 8 or 12 hour increments.
  9. For Category ‘0’ bid RN’s only: The Nursing Information Center (NIC) will make every attempt to place you in the unit you bid for;   however, as census/staffing changes occur, you will be reassigned to another unit within your skill mix.  You will be notified of this assignment change when you report to the NIC at the beginning of the shift.
  10. If you call off two (2) or more times within a 12 month period after being accepted to work on a bidded shift, you are ineligible to bid for 12 months unless an exception is granted by Manager, Supplemental Staffing and the Vice President, Patient Services or designee.
  11. You must submit all bid(s) via computer or telephone to the NIC at 412-232-8075.
  12. If you bid on a shift and then call off on another scheduled shift during the same pay period, you will not receive your bid rate.  However, you will receive your base pay for the bidded shift for which you actually worked.  If you bid on a shift and do not meet your current scheduling obligations during the same pay period, you will not receive your bid rate.  However, you will receive your base pay for the bidded shift for which you actually worked.
  13. Full-time and Part-time RN’s are not eligible for the bidding program and the “Code 12 Bonus” simultaneously in the same pay period.
  14. You cannot switch a scheduled shift with another nurse in order to participate in this bidding program.
  15. At the time of the bid, it is your responsibility to provide the NIC with direct contact information, so that the bid may be confirmed as accepted by Mercy Hospital.
  16. Placing a bid means you are verifying you are available to work. If the bid is accepted, and you are no longer able to work that shift, it will be considered one call-off.
  17. All bids will be reviewed immediately and accepted/rejected within 24 hours prior to the beginning of the bidded shift.  If direct contact is not made via telephone, you must then confirm your acceptance via telephone to the NIC ASAP. If the confirmation is not received within 6 hours before the bidded shift begins, the posted position will be filled by another employee and you will not be paid.
  18. You must place a bid to work at least two (2) hours before the beginning of the posted shift, or you will have to schedule the shift at your base rate.
  19. If your bid is rejected and a need resurfaces (late call off), the NIC will call you back and request that you work at the original bid rate.  You are not required to accept this offer.
  20. If the unit census changes and you are not needed:
    a.  You will be reassigned to another unit within your skill mix at the original bid rate. Or,
    b.  If there are no staffing needs on another unit within your skill mix, you will be cancelled up to 1 ˝ hours prior to the beginning of the bidded shift.
  21. For selected units with Call - If you are accepted for a bid shift and then placed on call, you will receive call pay unless you are called into work; at that point, you will receive your accepted bid rate.
  22.  Misuse, abuse and manipulation of scheduling and the bidding program will make you ineligible for future bidding.
